North Carolina rap phenomenon Toosii returns with his first single of 2022, “Keeper.” The record, which serves as a richly atmospheric track with hypnotic percussion, celebrates finding the one you want to grow old with.
Tender yet bristling with the realism and humor that are hallmarks of his music, the song reminds us that the 22-year-old artist is indeed a “keeper.” Accompanied by a Brian Roles-directed music video, the record merges the rapper’s performance and footage of several couples, at different stages of their relationships—including Toosii and his girlfriend Samaria—living out their love in real life. The visuals, as revealed on Twitter, were supposed to serve as Samaria’s pregnancy announcement, which was announced earlier this month.
“And we could grow old like Viv and Phil / It’s just something ’bout when I’m workin’, I can’t be sittin’ still,” he raps on the song, referencing the classic sitcom series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Elsewhere, he unloads surefire lines, “Fell in love with a Leo but her attitude on Pisces / Nasty like a Scorpio, this shit’s more than likely / When we in missionary, she gon’ lean over and try to bite me.”
