Multi-platinum selling singer and songwriter SZA releases the visual for “I Hate U” starring actor and rapper LaKeith Stanfield.
Directed by Jack Begert, the three-minute clip finds LaKeith arguing presumably with a respective loved one who doesn’t make a cameo in the video before throwing his phone in the ocean. Although the “Love Galore” singer does not make a cameo in her own video, she did point out via Instagram that it was part one in a series of visuals, hence the “not the end” screen that closes the visual.
“I Hate U” was released last month via TDE/RCA Records and earned SZA her first #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and debuted at #7 on Billboard’s Hot 100, marking her fifth top 10 record and second debut on the chart. Her first Hot 100 top 10 debut as the main artist was “Good Days,” which is currently Grammy-nominated for Best R&B Song. “I Hate U” also broke the record for the most-streamed R&B song by a female artist on Apple Music in its first week.
SZA’s highly-awaited follow-up to 2017’s Ctrl has been in the works for quite some time, although it seems we’re getting closer and closer to a full-length release announcement. In 2022, she saw major success with releases like “Hit Different” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and “Good Days,” as well as her recently performed and not officially titled song “Shirt.” While we wait, watch the video for “I Hate U” below.
