Sudan Archives has released a marvelous new music video for her latest track “NBPQ (Topless),” which she describes as “my autobiography,” in anticipation of her forthcoming album Natural Brown Prom Queen.
The video, directed by Augusta YR, has surreal, psychedelic imagery reminiscent of David Lynch’s take on Alice in Wonderland, all of which serve to reinforce Sudan’s repeated vocal insistence that she is “not typical.” Whether she’s standing tall in a teacup, seeming small from her own wig, or dozing off on a couch next to a masked person holding a goat, Sudan’s enchantment is always apparent.
As she continues to set the stage for Natural Brown Prom Queen, Sudan had a breakthrough month in February. Following the success of the music videos she created for “Home Maker” and “Selfish Soul,” both from her previous album, she was inducted into YouTube Music’s Foundry Class of 2022, joining the ranks of such notable artists as Babytron, Obongjayar, and Genesis Owusu.
