JID brings together some of the hottest rappers in Atlanta with his latest single “Surround Sound” featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate. Produced by DJ Scheme, Nuri, and frequent collaborator Christo, the song is set to appear on his forthcoming album titled The Forever Story.
Ahead of the single, JID shared via Instagram, “Growing up in a big family, it was never quiet around the house at all. I always found a way to silence the chaos around me, and channel some type of calm in the midst of whatever was goin’ on. From music blasting out of Squig Stankin Lincoln with them 2 10s in the back blowing out the speakers, or even just goin’ outside in the neighborhood hearing gun shots, or kids playing and chasing the ice cream truck, all these sounds helped me keep my awareness to make decisions and shit.”
“Surround Sound” samples Aretha Franklin’s classic 1965 song “One Step Ahead,” which can be heard in the intro and refrain. JID immediately sets the tone for the song, kicking off his verse with “I done came back around like a nigga selling crack in pounds / I got a bag now but it’s nothing to brag ’bout.” Per usual, 21 Savage comes through with the braggadocious one-liners, rapping about his show prices and sending shots at his detractors. Baby Tate comes through on the final verse of the first-half of the recording, energizing the song with witty bars and much more.
“Surround Sound” is JID’s first release of the year and arrives months removed from “Ambassel” on the Madden NFL 22 Soundtrack and “Skegee” which was released in February 2021. Last year, he went on a feature streak, working with the likes of Doja Cat, Imagine Dragons, Khalid, Kari Faux, and James Black to name a few. The Forever Story is JID’s first album since 2018’s DiCaprio 2 and “Surround Sound” seems to signal a new era for the Atlanta rapper. Listen below.
