Outside of big cities, it is uncommon for high-end brands to have their own namesake storefronts, as is the case in most regions. When a global fashion powerhouse like Gucci opens a storefront in Detroit, Michigan, it must say something about the state’s largest city.
On August 22, Gucci launched its newest store at this site on Library Street. Previously, the only Michigan outpost of the luxury fashion label was found at the Somerset Collection Mall in Troy. However, the latest flagship store in Detroit will be the Italian fashion house’s first freestanding location in Michigan and one of the city’s first premium retail establishments.
The new Detroit store brings together Library Street’s vintage buildings with the refined aesthetic of the Gucci brand. Restored glass tiles and geometric metalwork decorate the store’s front, which is also featured inside. A custom monochromatic floor pattern that echoes the exterior’s geometric paneling creates attractive three-dimensional effects and fits in well with the spherical form of the ceiling fittings. The end effect is an inviting and distinctively Gucci environment.
By partnering with local organizations and students to “push for greater representation in the fashion industry” and hosting an event to spotlight the Detroit-based beneficiaries of its Changemakers program, Gucci hopes to make the opening of its newest site as significant as any retail debut can be.
