Toronto is a hotbed for new and talented producers to shine and FORTHENIGHT is amongst the several to create some of our favorite records over the past several years. Having an RIAA 24x Latin Diamond certification, GRAMMY, and a catalog full of viral triumphs, the beatmaker has undoubtedly cemented his presence within the music industry. Many may know him for Summer Walker and SZA’s “No Love,” Bad Bunny’s “P FKN R,” or even his first placement on KILLY’s “Half A Ticket.” Either way, the rising superproducer is here to stay for many years to come.
“I started making music around my first year of high school,” he shared with us in an interview. “One day, I basically downloaded FL Studios and started chopping samples up and experimenting with actual melodies. From there I really just found a passion for it so that’s how I really got into making compassions for other producers.”
For Behind The Records, FORTHENIGHT breaks down a handful of his hit records, including songs with Ehboni, Young Nudy, Don Toliver, and several others. Check it out below!
Summer Walker & SZA – “No Love”
Came about from a sample pack last year called Tokyo nights and from there, Sonni the producer picked up the pack and made the beat out of it. He released through beats stars—Summer Walker’s team heard the beats and hit up Sonni and wanted the record for the single. I did the baseline and the composition Sonni did the 808 and the drums. This was one of my first really big songs so that meant a lot which got me on the Billboard R&B producer list at No. 8.
88GLAM – “Swim”
We were in the studio together, one of the last beats we made together during the session. Was really tired and PROD.1K—co-producer did the drums for the beat—thought the track was actually going to another artist, but that artist didn’t end up using it and actually ended up going to 88GLAM. I made the melody. I’ve always wanted to get on an 88GLAM project so worked out in the end.
Don Toliver – “Can’t Feel My Legs”
This record was done by me and Wondagurl and that was from a sample pack called Moonnight Vol. 1—a very old sample pack and Wondagurl heard, she did her thing and sent it to Don Toliver. I did the composition.
I really wanted to work with Don Toliver for a very long time and funny enough I didn’t even know the song when I worked on it because the song was done a year prior to it going out. The way I found out the song was released was I went on someone’s IG live and heard the song in the background and was like wait I helped make this record, and didn’t even know it came out.
Ebhoni – “Rotation”
Me and Ebhoni, on Zoom sessions, sending beats back and forth and this was one of the ones that got placed with Villa Beatz. I did some of the drums and the whole composition and Villa Beatz helped with the drums and bass. This record means a lot because in the industry you have surface-level relationships with artists and producers so being able to work on a track with my good friend meant a lot to me.
Young Nudy – “2Face”
I’ve been working on sending a bunch of samples back and forth to the producer Bentley Coupe. He hit me up on IG saying he wanted to work with me and I have a dark sound that went well with Young Nudy. I sent him all my samples and packs, public and exclusive. I did the composition. Nudy is one of those artists that I’ve been listening to for years like since High school with my friends so it was big that I actually was able to get a record with him.
