Today, Demi Lovato shares her new single and its accompanying music video for “Skin of My Teeth.” The record serves as the lead single to her forthcoming pop-rock album, HOLY FVCK, slated to release on August 19th.
In the record, Demi seemingly calls back to their rehab stint that quietly took place last year, singing, “Demi leaves rehab again / When is this shit gonna end?” In 2018, the singer went through a near-fatal drug overdose, and in December, announced that they were completely ditching the “California sober” lifestyle to opt out of alcohol and marijuana as a whole. Elsewhere in the song, Demi chants, “I’m alive by the skin of my teeth / I survived when it got harder to breathe / Asking why doesn’t make it easier, go easier on me.”
HOLY FVCK marks Lovato’s eighth studio album, serving as a proper follow-up to 2021’s Dancing With the Devil…The Art of Starting Over. Upon release, the latter gained praise from fans and critics alike in addition to featuring the likes of Saweetie, Ariana Grande, Noah Cyrus, and Sam Fischer. Songs like pre-release cuts “Anyone” and “Dancing With The Devil” as well as newer records like “Met Him Last Night” quickly rose to popularity, signaling Demi’s much-awaited return whilst also exploring unventured territory musically. Similarly, this new project finds the musician in a new space both mentally and music-wise.
“Skin of My Teeth” is produced by OAK, who notably worked on records for Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Alessia Cara, and a number of songs for Demi Lovato in the past. Songwriters Keith Sorrells, Laura Veltz, Lil Aaron, and Alex Niceforo also lend a hand on the track. Listen to the record below.
