Today, girl group Citizen Queen share their fourth original single “XO,” concurrently serving as the first record of theirs since the departure of former member Hannah Mrozak. The record’s accompanying video sees the group in a courtroom where they play judge and jury.
Kaedi kicks the song off with empowering lyrics, “I’m over giving second chances / Confidence too lit to let you take my heart for ransom / Can’t take my heart for ransom.” Nina follows, singing, “Walking past the mirror like I love me / Hands up in the air, stripper dance, stripper dance / You ain’t gotta tell me that you love me, just show me them bands.” Elsewhere, Kaylah and Cora take over the song’s hook, chanting “no love, we don’t need it, no.”
“XO” marks the group’s first official release of the year, following a number of live performances and visual efforts released in the months leading up to its debut. In 2021, CQ shared their single and its accompanying video “Y” and prior to that, “No Ego,” which is an R&B-infused pop anthem about self-love. Last month, the group unveiled performance videos for “Y” as well as their record “Call Me Queen.” This, however, was followed by Hannah Mrozak’s departure who cited seeking new musical and creative outlets as her reason for leaving.
Currently, Citizen Queen—now comprised of Nina Nelson, Kaylah Sharve’, Kaedi Dalley, and Cora Isabel—is reportedly working on their debut album under RCA Records. In the meantime, watch “XO” below.
